My husband and I recently dined in the Fairmount section of Philly – an area we don’t frequent enough. We met with our (newly married) friends and headed to Hickory Lane – an American bistro that just opened earlier this year.
Located across from the Eastern State Penitentiary (one of the coolest places in Philly and home to famous criminals such as Al Capone & Willie Sutton), this intimate corner BYOB is really great. Upon entering, I was immediately taken by the Michael Biello lighting hung throughout the restaurant (always a bonus) and the surprisingly smart use of burlap as curtains. Ok, enough about the cool interiors… on to the food.
After reading a review that the chef was from Rouge, my expectations were set fairly high… and to be honest, he did not disappoint. My filet was done to perfection, my husband’s French soup was one of the best I’ve ever tasted, and my friend’s seared tuna was picturesque (literally, I took a picture of it).
The staff was attentive & friendly… and Jack (the owner) was knowledgeable and fun to chat with throughout our meal. Get yourself a nice bottle of red and head over to Hickory Lane located on the corner of Fairmount and Corinthian Avenues … you will not regret it. Oh but I should mention, it comes off as a cozy date place… so I wouldn’t recommend bringing the kiddos. And really, who doesn’t need a date night?
