After running around Eastern State Penitentiary (“One Man’s Prison is Another Man’s Castle) for an hour we needed lunch stat and Hickory Lane with its bright green chairs and tons of outdoor seating was calling my name. I knew this was a lunch spot more for me than for them but seriously I like to squeeze in a little fake me time from time to time. First thing I will say. The food was amazing. The onions on the chicken sandwich were treated for two hours (we asked) in some magical way that I just can’t put into words. The boys shared a plate of fries…which also had a spectacular grill cheese on it which they foolishly ignored. The rare presence of fries can have that effect on them. The menu has a lot of yummy grown up options at lunch pricing ($10 avg.) So now you know why I call it 100% yummy.
As far as being kid friendly it is pretty good. They have high chairs. Our hostess / server was able to whip up some new crayon packs and paper for the boys (since I was unprepared for my improptu lunch). Which was a huge help. I don’t think every restaurant has to be family friendly but I do think that this neighborhood at lunch time does call for it. I saw stroller after stroller go by as the boys sat there happy munching on fries, coloring and watching the cars go by. I did have friend and baker Lindsey Love (CoCo Love Homemade) hanging out with me for the morning so I will admit it was a little more relaxing than usual. Some simple things I think would have made a huge difference would have been those disposible (sorry) plastic cups with lids that most places have and maybe chocolate milk or one kid drink. I am totally fine with there being only one kid item on the menu and honestly $10 for a supreme grill cheese and fries so I can sit outside and have an amazing lunch with a friend works for me.
I do think you should check it out for a lunch break with little ones or friends.
If your little one is great at sitting in highchairs for meals the sidewalk is wide but the area is busy with cars and light foot traffic. You might want to do what we did and let them run around the prison for a little bit and wear them out.
