My Orange Lip-Shtick

It is this orange lipstick trend that is dawning the smackers of everyone out there that got me thinking. If wearing sweatpants is mom code for “I have given up” then what do my chapstick wearing ways say about me? Every year I belly up to a make-up counter and torment the make-up artist with a question I am sure she has never been asked before… “Can I wear red lipstick (I’m a ginger)?” She says “of course” and I always end up hating it.

This is the jam up… I want to wear a real color lipstick like red or the trendy orange but when I put it on I swear my lips shrink and to me look super thin. Last month I was at a Stella and Dot party when I cornered local make-up artist (+friend) Kelley Huges-Wohlfarth with my dilemma.  That little gab session paid off because today I popped into The Parlor and Kelley and I tackled this orange lipstick trend. I could go to CVS and waste more money on a whim. I could go to MAC and talk to someone that has more make up on than a circus performer. I know they are required to but I have such a hard time thinking that they can relate to what I am looking for when they have airbrushed, sequin rainbows on their cheeks and lashes that hit the ceiling. Super fun look I just think it would scare the boys.

Kelley and I played around with some different colors with different level of bright pink and orange based on my skin tone. I have to say that I actually really loved breaking out of the pink zone. I must have 10 lip glosses and lipsticks all in the same shade of pink and this was a great way to break the cycle.

Kelley gave me an pinky-orange pucker and smokey vamp eyes and in the end I felt hot, looked hot and looked like I could totally fit in on an episode of True Blood (that is a good thing). Kelley vamped me up b/c I asked but best thing of all was in the end we all agreed that this was a hot look but my best look was my most natural one.  In the end HINT from her organic make-up line VAPOR is what we ended going with. Which is a pinky, orange, coral. Along with HINT I also bought the nude lip liner pencil Kelley recommended to help make my lips look more pronounced reducing the shrinking effect.

The only place I needed to go before I had to get home was the grocery store. All made up and no where to go we decided that my look out ranked both Super Fresh and Whole Foods and that I should go straight to Wegman’s. I also got to debut it at Henry’s preschool during pick up time. Confusing both him and his teachers was fun. I say all this because my daily life does not call for make-up let alone full make-up. But if I can toss on some mascara and a shade of the current lipstick trend I think I am doing pretty good.

Last night we took the whole crew to Zahav (my favorite) and I loved that I got to throw on my new lipstick b/c the boys did not really afford me enough time to do much of anything else before we rushed out the door.

Kelley’s Step by Step guide for putting on lipstick

1. Make sure your lips are matte. If possible use a dry concealer, or powder over a moist one. You need a product that will help diffuse the lip line as well as attract and hold the lip products.
2. Use a nude or flesh tone lip liner. Again, one on the drier side. feather this product onto the lip line, lightly expanding outside of the lip line ever so slightly. with practice, you can go bigger!
blot the liner or “lightly blend” it into your skin. *I am going to call out that Kelley said FEATHER the lip liner on. That mean do not draw an outline around your lips. Those days are over.

3. One more gentle swoop of powder, just to be sure

4. Using a lip brush, apply the lip color of choice. I usually start in the middle of the bottom lip. Feathering out on either side, then smack your lips together to spread the product. I like it to blend, pressing it into the lips with a good couple smacks. *I tried to apply it without a lip brush when I got home and quickly realized that was not going to work. Don’t skip this tool. Makes a huge difference.
5. Keep applying with the lip brush if necessary. Spreading the color to the outer corners and to the top lip. Again, pat or smack the lips together.Really less is more with makeup. Even if you’re trying to be dramatic, a good thorough application will last longer than haphazardly applying an abundance of product.

* adding a touch of gloss is your choice. I truly enjoy matte lips or just a lip that is not glistening like a stripper on rodeo drive! *I did add gloss this morning on top of my HINT lipstick and man was Kelley right. I ruined the whole look. Skip the gloss with these bright shades.
