HOW I BECAME A PIRATE
Upper Darby Performing Arts Center 601 Lansdowne Avenue, Drexel Hill, PA 19026 visit site>
We are just back from the How I Became a Pirate show at the Upper Darby Performing Arts Center. Henry (3 y.o.) has been to a couple of shows at the Arden so I knew he would be good but this was Ollie’s (20 months) first “live” performance. I actually found the show to be really good, funny, entertaining and endearing. Early Jackson plays the lead and when I tell you he has a voice that is straight from the Backyardigan’s you know it is a compliment from the highest place from me (the fact that the Backyardigan’s are not on iTunes blows my mind). If you can think back to your annual high school musical that is EXACTLY what this is expect you don’t know the kids. Teenagers fascinate me so I loved it. These kids put on a really good performance and I was super impressed. There are actually some REALLY funny parts.
The seating is a big high school auditorium so you can see no matter where you are. I did bring snack and water in. I have no idea if that is forbidden but that is a rule I always need to break b/c my kid’s middle names should be “snacks.”
I do recommend you check out their upcoming shows. Aug 15th -17 they will be doing a Disney Spectacular. If you have been thinking about taking your kids to a play I think this is a great stepping stone and if they freak you have not spent a lot of money. Ollie did great until the last 15 minutes but the place is filled with kids that did great until the last 15 minutes. It is to be expected and you will be in good company. There were mothers with toddler and infants, grandparents with 5 year olds and up. They recommend this show for 5 years old and up but you be the judge of what your kid can sit through.
Getting there:
From the city there is no way to do it in under 30 minutes (don’t believe your iPhone). I would take 76 to City Line and then a left on Lansdowne Rd. Park in the high school parking lot right before the UDPAC.
Have Fun!
