Sideways Stories from Wayside SchoolArden Theater Co. 40 N. 2nd St., Philadelphia, PA 19106. visit site
Once again Arden Theater has done an amazing job adapting a classic into a play that can keep a toddler’s attention for 2 hours + intermission. (Intermissions can be a night killer). I never read the Sideways Stories from Wayside School books so I have no idea what I was walking into.
If you have not read the books (series of 3) they are about a school where wacky teachers turn students into apples and pretty much anything can happen. The play reminded me of the first Pixar movie I watched with my kids where we were both laughing and it was a treat. Parents and kids were all laughing together. The play was funny it was adorable and everyone clapped after each scene.
I will tell you that if Ollie (3) was writing this review it would go a bit different. Ollie just turned 3 and the first act scared him. When the teacher character, Mrs. Gorp, turned the kids into apples the lights would flash and she would make a scary face and the students would scream and run all over the place. Henry (4) was fine but Ollie has a bit of a “fraidy cat” streak going so he left after the first act with his Dad.
Henry and I stayed and the 2nd act was awesome. If your little one can manage it you need to stay. Between the Tango teacher in drag and the dance break scene you will be glad you did. After the show the kids get to do a Q&A with the actors and then they head out to the lobby where they can actually meet them and take pictures.
If you have family coming in for the holiday or you are looking for a great family activity or date night with the kids this is an awesome option. The show is running through February.
