SPRUCE STREET HARBOR EXTENDED!
401 South Columbus, Philadelphia, PA 19106 / Visit Website>
Hey Everyone. Since Spruce Street Harbor (SSH) has been extended for another month I though it was worth giving you the low down of our visit. SSH is really easy to recognize in all your friend’s Facebook shots because of the hammocks, hanging lights and the giant Visit Philly Adirondack chair. Here is what we thought….during the three hours that we were there…ah yeah 3 hours.
It is like a city boardwalk which was their goal. I had my doubts and I totally eat my words on that. There is a Garces pop up restaurant called the Blue Anchor which seems to have a long line all the time so we never got to check it out. However Philly eater.com did a nice review and has a sample menu so if you are interested in that I am going to send you over there….craft beers, Village burger yatta, yatta.
As far as entertainment it is a mix of free and paid. First if you have your heart set on one of those hammocks I think it would be easier to find a four-leaf clover in the desert. When people get one they seem to also have a War and Peace sized book with them and hunker in for days. I mean couples are doubling up and just living in those things. Kiss that dream good-bye.
As far a games this is where SSH drastically differs from The Oval. Not everything is free at SSH but it is not clearly marked so people really have no idea that when they are waiting to play after you that you have 30 minutes and paid for the time. Be prepared to pay for shuffle board, ping-pong and bocce. There were also arcade games which were actually really easy for the boys. They are also running the swan peddle boats if you want to take a spin.
There are small free areas for the kids like giant Legos, large Jenga-ish blocks, life-size chess and Connect Four. Next there is a fountain that the kids can swim in so pack a suit and towel in your bag. The boys are water magnets so they jumped right in.
The one thing I have to say be prepared for a lot of unattended children. I LOVE kids and I am happy to help out a little one but I really go to these things to spend time with my boys so when you end up playing mom to a kid that no one is paying attention to it breaks your heart and put a kink in your night.
Parking is probably SSH biggest downfall. We caught free parking in front of Zahav and there is metered parking but it is limited and if you have kids you want to get as close as possible. The Penn’s Landing / Seaport Museum lot is $20 a car which is extortion.
There is free nightly entertainment at SSH. When we were there we ended our night sitting in the beach lounge chairs with a performance from Cotton Candy Circus. The boys loved it. The only thing is I can’t find a calendar of events anywhere on-line.
In the end the boys had a great time and I only spent $15, which I consider a success. It was an awesome night filled with great photo ops. I am not sure if we will make it back by September 28th it is new officially closing date but I am glad we went.
