A Year With Frog and Toad
Arden Theatre Company, 40 N. 2nd St., Philadelphia, PA 19106.
If you are new around here Arden Theater is one of our most favorite places to see children’s theater. If the words children’s theater makes you cringe, I get it, but then you don’t know Arden.
A Year With Frog And Toad is the only play that Arden has ever repeated and it is wonderful. The play takes you through a year with two best friends: Frog and Toad. You follow them through changing seasons and through antics that only two best friends can understand. Toad hates the way he looks in a bathing suit and when the turtle over hears this it brings on a musical montage and the whole forest waits for him to come out of the pond. Toad was not lying he does look silly in a bathing suit but Frog comes to his rescue by reveling his swimsuit look which gets even more applause.
As always Arden never gives you a cookie cutter performance. The set is two giant houses that spin around as the scenes change. Three actors make up the ever changing cast of woodland friends, which come in and out of the performance as moles, mischievous squirrels, the snail (who delivers the mail, of course), and the geese that come and go with the seasons.
The boys sat through the whole performance with smiles on their face and giggling the whole time. I know because at Arden plays I spend more time watching the boys then I do the play sometimes. As always the actors from the play do a Q & A at the end of the play and are then available in the lobby for pictures.
Arden is running the play until January 29th with plenty of performances the week of Christmas including one on Christmas Eve. This is such a wonderful way to spend the holiday week, especially if your kids are off school, or if you have family in town. Use code TOAD for ½ off Friday nights.
Have a great time! I know you will enjoy it!
