Was this the school of your first choice?: YES

After having experienced the school are you happy with your choice?: YES

Do you think your child will finish up to 8th grade at their current school?: Probably.

What are your biggest concerns about your child’s school?:-A principal that is hostile to parental involvement, feedback and communication (generally very old-school), although she is very good at managing the school.
-Poor, old-school communication with parents (a paper folder that goes home to parents weekly with flyers etc.; no email, text, or website communication from school administrators or teachers; only email from school HSA).

What do you love most about your child’s school?: This year, a fantastic teacher who has made my child love learning (not so much last year in K, but I think that was the exception)
-The ability to continue to survive (even thrive) despite the insanity of draconian budget cuts (the extra $1300 per head from Penn sure helps!)
-Involved parents and community that cares about our kids and contributes to a successful school

If cost was not an option where would you send your child?: Not Sure

What are 3-5 things you would tell a close friend that is considering the school your child is at?:

-the K lottery has been a good thing – it has calmed the insanity (I believe all applying kids have gotten in since it was implemented)
-Poor communication with parents and lack of approachability to the principal for change are the number one drawbacks of the school – do not expect a place that will be open to parental ideas/feedback.
-The place operates smoothly, the teachers are generally pretty fantastic, and my kid is happy.

Was this the school of your first choice?: YES

After having experienced the school are you happy with your choice or would you prefer another school?: We love this school!

What are your biggest concerns about your child’s school?: Budget Cuts! We start each year with less money than the last. We have wonderful parents who fundraise to make up for gaps and some added assistance from Penn but it’s hard. I am also concerned with the District-wide emphasis on standardized testing. Standardized test prep detracts from learning, and it is disappointing that the system forces creative, energetic teachers and school leaders to prioritize testing.
What do you love most about your child’s school?: Amazing teachers, beautiful building, wonderful community. We are fortunate to have the small town/suburban K-8 experience in our urban neighborhood.

If cost was not an option where would you send your child?: Penn Alexander

What are 3-5 things you would tell a close friend that is considering the school your child is at?:

1) The teachers are wonderful and your child will get a great education.
2) My kids love school.
3) Lots of community – Families walk to school and people know each other. Parents know each other. Teachers know the kids. The principal knows the kids. etc.
4) The public school funding environment is bleak, and parents are asked to help with time and money.
5) It is a public school in a large tightly run district with a traditional principal who is extremely dedicated and runs a tight ship. Don’t come expecting the flexibility of a small private school.
